Translate your context
Diaspora candidates often carry experience across countries, languages, and community settings. The interview challenge is to make that experience easy for the employer to understand.
Do not assume the interviewer knows your school system, community organization, volunteer role, or previous market. Explain the scale, audience, constraints, and result in plain language.
Use compact stories
Prepare five short stories before the interview: solving a problem, handling conflict, learning quickly, helping a customer or community member, and delivering under pressure.
A useful structure is situation, action, result, and lesson. Keep each story under two minutes unless the interviewer asks for more detail.
- Name the problem clearly.
- Focus on what you personally did.
- End with a result or what changed afterward.
Ask questions that show judgment
Good questions make you look thoughtful. Ask about success in the first three months, team communication habits, manager expectations, customer needs, and how the company supports growth.
For diaspora-connected roles, you can ask how the team serves Ethiopian, Eritrean, African, immigrant, or multilingual audiences. This shows you understand both the work and the community context.
